I’m in a bind. Which design (or parts of a design) should I choose?

    Dark Comments:

The dark red background with texture is nice, catchy, modern eye candy.

The iPhone app-esque gradients on the side navigation are kind of meh–the gradients are a little too strong–they stick out like a gimmick b/c gradients aren’t really used anywhere else. Also, if the client ever wants longer text with some kind of line break it will bust that symmetric layout. Light’s got more flexibility there.

    Light Comments:

Definitely not as sexy as Dark, but it’s got a lot of good stuff going on. More legible font sizes and spacing. The banner items and navigation seem much cleaner. The little circle/carat graphic looks nice and connects the concept of clickable headlines in the banner with the (hopefully) clickable headlines below.

I might add a little extra top/bottom padding to the horizontal nav menu above the banner area. It seems a little cramped and some whitespace would alleviate that.

Liked the little Clive Owen screenshot. Unexpected easter egg for the in-progress design.

If I had my way, I’d take the backgrounds & textures from the Dark layout and use them with the Light design elements.

  2. the maroon color is catchier, also it’s SIU’s chief color.

  3. Try it — I would like to see you ” take the backgrounds & textures from the Dark layout and use them with the Light design elements.”
